Chicken Fat Attack

September 7th, 2006

When I was kid, along with perhaps millions of kids in gym classes across America, I was forced to exercise to a song called Chickenfat. I always assumed the song was done by nobody in particular, but how wrong I was. Chickenfat was written by Meredith Willson and sung by Robert Preston, who had some slight success with something called The Music Man.

Robert Preston (1918-1987)

Isn’t this just great? Robert Preston was one-of-a-kind. It isn’t so much the nostalgic kick of hearing this again that I appreciate, as it is Preston’s tremendous talent and enthusiasm.

Thanks go to a blogger named Defective Yeti, who provides much more background information. And thanks to my twin sister Jean for pointing this out!

Thanks for the mention, Dougie, but I have a question. How do I get to all the past posts on your blog. I’m un-blog-worthy! I tried opening a page last year, and promptly gave up after one day.

Also, what happened to all the great stuff on the original Dograt.com?

Yes, “Chicken Fat” was a love/hate thing. It was something I suffered through during a chubby awkward phase in my development, but you couldn’t help but be swept up by the enthusiasm of the late, great Robert Preston’s gusto and vigor!

    And, Boss; “Marshmallow?”

I’m supposed to get a message whenever a comment is added — including my own comments — but this feature isn’t working, so I have to make an effort to find new comments. It’s one of the things I have to confront in Wordpress, and I’ll figure it out before too much longer — I hope!

Every blog entry is, and always will be, available by either clicking on the date of the calendar, like the one on this page, or if you don’t know the date use the search window in the upper right corner with the “Go!” button. This is, for me, the biggest thing about the blog. You can search it, because there’s a database behind it. Try it now. Type WABC in the box above and click Go!

Using the search feature, you can get all of the multi-part entries to appear together on one page. Yes, I’ll be posting single links with all of the parts to The Wizard of OZ and the New York Radio show.

The old Web site is at this URL:

    http://www.dograt.com/index_save.htm

The home page links on most of the pages come back to the blog. I’ll be reworking some of the old posts into new, brief entries, and I’ve already done it for a couple of things.

The biggest attraction, by far, in the old site are the Our Gang videos. I will be remastering them all, from scratch with fresh transfers from Laser Video Disc, along with installments that I never put up. Then I’ll post them one by one, at four times the bit rate I used previously. The title of the series will be, “The Complete Miss Crabtree.” Although at the moment I’m not 100% sure I have every single June Marlowe installment.

Does that answer the question? ;-)

Excellent, Dougie! Yes, even I can understand those simple instructions. Ah, yes, Miss Crabtree, one of your first true B&W loves!
