The Who Stones Sell Out

Here is a bizarre, but essential, 1964 appearance by the Rolling Stones on, of all things, The Red Skelton Show. Too bad they lip-synched, instead of performing live. How young they were!

Despite the bad boy image the Stones projected, they had in fact already gone commercial. In 1963 they produced a jingle for Rice Krispies.

One of the songs in the video is Bobby Womack’s “It’s All Over Now.” I’ve always been knocked out by that record. Here it is, taken from a 1982 British LP I’ve played dozens of times that still sounds fantastic.

  1. Chuck Berry just reached 80 last year! I got to see him perform live when I was dating my first boyfriend, whose Hollywood writer/producer uncle always got us front row tickets via Ticketron to any concert we wanted to see, for free! It got loud, and boring, after a while. The groupies were interesting, though.

  2. I remember seeing “Hail, Hail Rock and Roll” back in the 80’s. HOW old is Chuck Berry now?? His annoyance at Keith Richards stuck in my mind, as well.

  3. Brian Jones drowned in 1969. It would be a few years before I realized that what I liked most about the Stones were Jones’ contributions. He gave each recording a unique sound. Nothing the Stones did after Jones parted (which he did before dying) interests me as much.

  4. My God, they’re practically still in utero! Just kidding. I haven’t heard the first song they lip sync in over 40 years! Which one of the four original Stones died? Or was it just one of the Beach Boys who died early? I seem to remember that one of the Stones drowned in a swimming pool.

  5. Ironically I was watching parts of the Chuck Berry documentary “Hail, Hail Rock and Roll” earlier today, which includes a clip of Keith Richards trying to back up Chuckles during “Carol”, and Chuck getting very frustrated that Keith just couldn’t bend the introductory chords JUST RIGHT…! Beauty clips, eh, and you’re right, that LP sounds amazing, even on my laptop speakers!
