Pigs is Pigs

The 1937 cartoon “Pigs is Pigs” is disturbing in a way that the previously posted “Spooks” isn’t. As nightmarish as the prospect is of being turned into a skeleton, by a skeleton, it’s totally unreal. In contrast, eating oneself to death is an all-too-real possibility for millions of people.

The pig in “Pigs is Pigs” isn’t Porky, but he appears to make an appearance as the running piggy in the middle. Why does Mama Pig have a German accent?

  1. The MGM Tom & Jerry cartoons — which I have never liked — were more likely to have a “Mammy” character, undoubtedly because Gone With the Wind was an MGM movie and Hattie McDaniel was very popular.

  2. You found it! I can honestly say that I couldn’t have been any older than five or six the last time I saw this. I had nightmares for weeks, because even back then, I had “issues” with food. Molly was totally creeped out by this, much more so than “Spooks.” Seeing it in color for the first time was a real treat! Thanks Doug! Now I don’t want a piece of that lovely, juicy, apple crumb pie downstairs, or maybe a sticky bun. Tom hides those in the freezer … Must … not .. . think .. about … them … aieeeee!!

Oh, haven’t you noticed that a lot of the mother figures in the old Warner Brother’s cartoons spoke in a German accent? Or maybe that was the old Tom & Jerry’s; can’t remember.
