Last week’s installment of ‘Tim Rice’s American Pie‘ on BBC Radio 2, the second in the series, was about Oregon. I was surprised to hear Rice mention the cartoonist Carl Barks.

Barks died in 2000, the same year that Charles Schulz passed away, but Barks was 99 — old enough to be Sparky’s father! Here’s a nice video about the late, beloved Old Duck Man.
What a terrific documentary about a truly nifty guy! BTW, the voice of the animated Scrooge McDuck is provided by actor Alan Young, a favorite of the Mank household, who is still alive and well at age 93. We got hooked on reruns of “Mr. Ed,” which Alan Young is best known for, as it comes on RTV (“Retro-TV”) at 6:30 a.m., while we’re up getting ready for school and work. Actress Connie Hines, who played wife Carol on the series, passed away last year, shortly before Christmas. I always miss the last five minutes because I have to drive Molly down to the bus.
