Great comment, wombmate! Bombs away, tora, tora, tora and all that jazz.
I was at Pearl Harbor on the 4th of July, 1984, during a 2-week business trip. I was in Hawaii by myself, and had to work throughout the one full weekend that I was there. Not fun, despite being at the Hyatt on Waikiki Beach. Did a lot of running, and that was good.
I stood on the USS Arizona Memorial with the women swooning over Jamie, the hunky park ranger. While the ladies took turns having their picture taken with Jamie, I stood off to the side with some kid who was wearing a Van Halen T-shirt. I thought to myself, “This is why men died? So this blow-head teen can wear a Van Halen t-shirt and the girls can flirt with Jamie and I can keep my cynical thoughts to myself? This is freedom? Yes, dammit, it is!”
Doug, you were also there at Pearl Harbor. Well, a few years after the fact. What year was it? I believe that you did get to visit the USS Arizona Memorial as part of your all expenses paid trip to Hawaii. You’ve been to Graceland AND Pearl Harbor! Which reminds me that Elvis performed a benefit concert in 1961 to help raise funds for the present Memorial. The various ways that funds were raised is pretty interesting, including proceeds from sales of the Revell “USS Arizona” model! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Arizona_Memorial
As I’m sure I’ve told you (Doug), my old boyfriend Mickey’s dad was at Pearl Harbor on that infamous day. The only reason he is still alive is because he overslept! As he walked toward the mess hall, he saw the bomb fall, totalling obliterating it and most of his best buddies.
