This poster was inserted in this week’s Boston Sunday Globe. It’s New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
Before Brady broke up with his actress girlfriend he got her pregnant. She had the baby, but Mr. Perfect is staying with his new girlfriend, the supermodel. Hey, he can afford it.
Pats coach Bill Belichick apparently felt he needed to cheat to guarantee victory. He’s been fined half a million bucks but, hey, he can afford it, and the team will undoubtedly cover it anyway. I really don’t care, but I’m glad people are seeing these guys as they really are — arrogant and self-centered.
Ah! You’re still there, Davie. Good. I have a Petula story for you. Will send e-mail tonight.
Don’t believe that Petula Clark ever sang off key…. Nah. Not possible. lol
In the “good old days” of sports the only thing that mattered and the only thing reported on was what happened on the field. Off the field activity was never, or hardly ever, mentioned. The sportswriters were aware of things but for the most part they didn’t write about them or cover stories were concocted to explain it away. That all changed about 30-40 years ago, post Watergate, when investigative journalism became popular and newspapers felt compelled to separate their sportswriters from the teams they covered.
Ha! Yes, it’s true, Sam. Nobody’s perfect, and idolatry is always risky. Certainly movie stars have a less than exemplary lifestyle. But team sports are considered to be good and wholesome, and sports stars are often presented as setting some sort of example for kids. Ridiculous.
Well, I have it on good authority that Stephen Colbert once kicked a puppy and Petula Clark once sang off-key at a concert people paid good money to see! So there!
I have absolutely not patience for sports “stars” the ilk of this dude. Then there’s the question of steroids. Now we have the “Juice” up on charges again. Sports has become tainted with bad people just like the movies. Ah, for the good old days.
