My father’s cousin Lawrie sent this video of an ingenious method to save a young deer that had fallen through some lake ice.

Here in hillbilly holler, the deer population has been shot TOO far back. I have heard of some PA hunters heading for Jersey, Massachusetts, and other points east where the pickings are better. Of course, you have to get buck and doe licenses there. Also, there are separate permits for type of weapon you use. Tom has a flintlock now, and it’s the last week of THAT season. Those things are horrifically loud close up!
We have a problem with too many deer around here. It’s not unusual to see a mother with her offspring in the woods behind our house. The real problem is the land can’t sustain all of the deer, and with all of the roads and cars, collisions are fairly common. As a result, I think the state has increased the hunting limit. They can’t be shot within town lines, but presumably if they’re killed where it’s permitted, the deer in the densely-populated areas will be able to move out to more open spaces.
Now I feel REALLY bad. We had venison steaks last night. No, Tom didn’t shoot it, but his friend Jimmy had brought them up. Jimmy’s friend NICK had shot it last month. The butcher neatly packages it and stamps the parts on each package. The meat is incredibly lean and delicious, but looks like liver.
