With sadness, we note the passing of singer Jo Stafford, whose 90th birthday was noted here last November. D.F. Rogers would like to point out Jo’s obituary in the Boston Globe (sourced from the L.A. Times), and a more comprehensive biography in The Telegraph. I’ll post another Stafford song or two tonight.

Jo apparently was a “dedicated smoker” until she was about sixty, and that undoubtedly accounted for her ability to sing deeper than she would otherwise have been able to do. Disk jockeys were often encouraged to smoke to deepen their voices.
Yikes! Synchronicity Molly and I were at a clothing store in the mall earlier this week. A “real old” song came on, as she puts it, came on, and she asked who it was. “Why, that’s Jo Stafford! Don’t you like her?” Molly thought her voice was too deep.
