  1. I’ve always felt that political conservatives are very, very poor losers after elections. To the point where sometimes I would think, “Oh well, if the Republican candidate wins, at LEAST the party will SHUT UP their screaming and complaining for awhile.” I get so SICK of it, just as I’ve had it up to the gills with the “Obama is a Muslim” and the “Obama was not born in the U.S.A” accusations.

Okay; forget the facts. Let’s just say for sake of argument that, the far right conservative “reality” (in THEIR minds, that is), is this: Obama took the past election illegitimately, as a person not born on American soil. And let’s just say for the sake of argument that, the far left liberal “reality” (in THEIR minds, that is) is this: George W. Bush won his first election as President illegitimately, as a person whose “hanging chads” voter ballots were counted in Florida, where his politician brother Jeb Bush could make sure that the ballots were counted in George W.’s favor.

Now let’s compare. Did the far left liberal Democrats rant on and on and on and on and on, ad infinitum, about George W. Bush stealing the election? Sure, they protested it and complained and then grumbled and then finally muttered under their breaths. But after awhile, THEY LET IT GO. The far right Republicans are like mad bulldogs, foaming at the mouth. They clamp down on something and NEVER let go. (And they’re very proud of that, too.)

But it makes sense to me, when I think about it. Liberals are people who are progressive, which by very definition means accepting of change, which requires flexibility. Conservatives are people who are trying to preserve the status quo, or else to repeal revisions made to the long-term, old-time status quo that they’re familiar and comfortable with. They react to change with fear, because change always, always introduces a wild card of risk into the system. It’s impossible to accurately predict every single repercussion of change, and guarantee absolute safety. Hence the tendency towards rigidity and inflexibility among conservative ranks. What appears to me, is that far right conservatives have a lot of difficulty in knowing WHAT and WHEN to just LET IT GO, even when their holding onto a grudge (such as in losing an election) makes them look irrationally spiteful to moderates within their own Republican party.
