One of the most familiar pieces in the traditional Classical music repertoire is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, the “Overplayed.” I’m up for listening to it again, thanks to this early stereo recording that should be heard with a decent pair of headphones to best appreciate its sonic splendor (with apologies to the hearing impaired).

It’s a best guess, like the birth of Jesus and the universe. Haydn knew Bach as an old man, and Beethoven as a youngster. In between, he knew Mozart for most of his 35 years.
The NYT crossword theme on the 17th was Beethoven. I gather that was the date of his baptism, for which there is an official record, as opposed to his birth, for which there isn’t.
