Reach Out, He’ll Be Gone

The Four Tops

I couldn’t let the week close without paying tribute to Levi Stubbs, who sang lead on this catchy little ditty that still brings a nostalgic tug to my heart as well as my ears.

  1. I forgot how hot Levi Stubbs was, on top of his great voice. Cute. I’m wasting, time, gotta muck out my room. Joan, I always liked Edie Adams, too, because she didn’t act like a “housewife,” singer like the late Rosemary Clooney, who I also adored. But then, our mother was no housewife! Doug could write a whole big post on Ernie Kovacks, too. My parents LOVED that show, especially my Dad, as I recall.

  2. NOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic voice! “Reach Out (I’ll Be There”) is in my Top 10 List! And don’t forget, he was the voice of the man-eating plant in the second version of “Little Shop of Horrors!” Here’s another one of his great performances, lesser-know, that always gives me goose bumps: (yeah, sorry, crappy video transfer)

  3. Hi Doug! I just read of Levi Stubbs’ passing in the N.Y. Times online obits. I was reading Edie Adams’ obit. I didn’t even know she passed away until I saw that Mark Evanier posted about she and Neal Hefti on his blog. It’s sad how many great people we’ve lost. And it really does seem when one entertainer dies, unfortunately others do each of the few days after. As a kid I used to imitate Edie Adams, doing her Muriel cigar commercial voice when the ads were shown. I always liked her when she’d appear on talk shows. About Levi Stubbs and the 4 Tops, I like “(Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) I Can’t Help Myself” the best of all their songs. The oldies station here plays it alot.
