High School Headphones

This will give my son a shock. Here I am when I was exactly the age he is now, about to turn seventeen.

I used rabbit ears for FM reception and, yes, I was seated to give the impression I had antennae coming out of my head. Ah, my first stereo — Pioneer SX-440 receiver, Radio Shack MC-1000 speakers, Garrard 40B turntable, Shure M91ED cartridge, and Pioneer SE-20 headphones.

When I was in high school I listened to the classics — The Who, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. Today, with the departure of Bush and Cheney, I’m reminded of this song.

  1. No, I never said I took the picture, I just remember seeing it. I’d bet Jeff took it. Jeff, of course, was and is a great photographer, but this one looks like an Instamatic.

  2. If Jean wants to lay claim to having taken the picture that’s OK with me. Jeff had just finished high school and was usually home most nights.

The black headphones were actually my first headphones. They were thrown in for free with the stereo. I didn’t use them for very long before buying the Pioneers. Dennis got those when I bought a pair of AKG K-140’s that I had for a long time. In fact, Cactus Lizzie saw me wearing them every day at work at the radio station.

  3. Wow! You really do look like a kid. I remember those “My Favorite Martian” headphones. Ditto the song. By the time you were working at Grants, you had a big pair of black earphones which I used every night to listen to my worn-down “Carpenters” and “Bread” albums. Say, where was Jeff on those nights? 😉
