Yes! That little word “color” that TV Guide put inside a rectangle, combined with the color photos on the cover and the slick paper for the national feature section, probably sold more color TV sets than all of RCA’s advertisements ever did. I think Dad said the console he bought in 1967 cost $700. I ran that through an inflation calculator once, and it came out to somewhere around $3500. Which means the 50-inch plasmas sets aren’t really all that out of line! But that doesn’t mean I’m going to buy one.
One more comment about Great Pumpkin is that ABC recorded the worst ratings ever for the show this year — 7.6 million viewers.
Remember when they used to mark if the show was in color? They didn’t stop that until the 70s, I believe!
