I should ask former “Jazz snob” Margo Guryan if she can guess who this is. Starting at 2:30 it’s fairly obvious, even for me. There’s a lot of Big Band in this Sixties Jazz sound.

Ok, thanks for the information Doug! 😉
Ha! LOL Lia. It’s Jazz drummer Buddy Rich, updating his Big Band sound for the Swinging Sixties.
Ringo Starr in his Jazz era before to join to the Rolling Stones.
Good question. The correct spelling could be Margot Gurney, but I’m not sure. The drumming style? Well, I recognized it because it seemed Johnny Carson had him on every other week. I used to wonder what other drummers thought of him, because he seemed to be more about speed than anything else.
The other thing that came to mind is right before the drum solo starts, it sounds almost like Hoyt Curtin’s “Jetsons” theme! On second thought, make that Curtin’s “Jonny Quest” theme.
by the way, who is Margo Guryan??
So at 2:30 a drum solo starts and I’m thinking, How the hell am I supposed to know by the style or sound of a drum solo who this is? Then within about 3 seconds I took a guess, researched it at amazon, and bingo, I was right (and I won’t ruin it for others guessing). I liked this arrangement a lot! But I’m interested in all things Bobbie Gentry to begin with.
