That Was Their Finest Hour

D-Day+75 years is tomorrow, and with all of the attention being paid to the invasion itself, I would like to note the contributions of the women in Britain who toiled in the fields. The Women’s Land Army.

PBS Masterpiece ran a beautifully presented and addictive soap opera, Home Fires, about women in a rural village during the war. I was really caught up in it, but the series ended abruptly after the second season.

Clare Calbraith

Clare Calbraith played a farmer’s wife, which meant her character didn’t need to join the Woman’s Land Army, she just had to “carry on.” Clare was nevertheless presented in clothing that was in keeping with the service.

For a view of women working in factories there is the wartime movie “Millions Like Us.” It has strong soap opera elements, which not only make it entertaining, but show what they were fighting for — lives that aren’t lived for the glory of a dictator.

Cartoony Looney – 84

This is the first strip of a 2-parter. I experimented a bit with the character designs here, which I quickly abandoned. For example, Wendell is gigantic and his tusks are unmanageably long.

Don’t ask me what today’s logo sketch is supposed to be, because I’m not entirely sure yet. It’s for the other project I want to develop.

Cartoony Looney – 80

I’m late posting this because I was away, arranging for something very special that will be revealed later. Here’s a Sunday strip for a Sunday that I call “deprogramming a programmer.” The technical references may be out of date, but the point is more true today than ever.

The customer is a character named Desmond that I created back in the mid-80’s. He was a stressed-out high technology worker of a very different sort than Dilbert, who was introduced at the end of the decade.

Today’s logo sketch is another variation on the theme of Bean Head.
