Here’s the wrap-up, kids. The decline of Top 40 AM radio, and the rapid rise of Album Rock on FM; a trend that overwhelmed even the mighty WABC. Thanks for watching!

Hi! I was reading your posts of WABC and Harry Harrison’s name reminded me of the fact that where I lived in Downingtown, PA, we could listen to Famous 56 WFIL Philly-and WABC which came in clear both day and night. I remember Ron Lundy, Dan Ingram, Johnny Dark, and Harry Harrison. WFIL had Dr. Don Rose, Jay Cook, Jim O’Brien,(father of “Roz” from “Frazier” and later a beloved Action News weatherman and anchor who died from a skydiving accident here in Pottstown in 1984), and of course George Michael whose “Sports Machine” TV show I miss. AM radio was great and I remember listening to it around age 4 (1965). Ah, the good ol’ days!
Why doesn’t Wacko Jacko just sell the sheet music back to Paulie? He really needs the money, from what I heard! I bought a small subscription to Napster and am surprised at what you CANNOT get without paying. You cannot get Beatles or Beach Boys. Sometimes you can go in the “back door” and get a recording through a Rhino collection from a group that is not posted, but not the two BIG BEES.
Jackson owns the songs, but not the recordings. The Beatles and their respective estates control those. An agreement has been reached between Apple and Apple, and their catalog should be appearing with great fanfare.
A very smart lawyer for Apple Records 30 years ago stipulated that its namesake, Apple Computer, could not compete with them in the music industry. Even Steve Jobs apparently wasn’t forward-thinking enough to be concerned about that ever happening. But it did.
I still feel we Boomer kids were given a great gift, growing up in the era of the big AM stations. And what a treat to grow up with the big NYC stations! That includes the TV stations, and all the great TV shows, including Soupy Sales, Sandy Becker, and Chuck McCann (we won’t talk about Morty Gunty, will we, Dougie?)
I think of my own daughter, nearly 11, and when I listen to some of the crap on her “Now 20” etc. albums, I could just DIE! They have to bleep out all the swear words! I now insist on listening to the CD first (at the store) before letting her buy them. You can only listen to some ghetto lord brag about his baby’s booty so many times! SHEESH! On the other hand, there ARE good artists out there, like Keith Urban, Coldplay, and the haunting “Lifehouse.” Gone are the transistor radios and vinyl records & 45s of our childhoods, in are the MP3 players that can hold thousands of songs in a device the size of a cigarette lighter!
I just signed up for Napster and the only bad thing is there is NO BEATLES, thanks to Wacko Jacko!
COUSIN BRUCIE, WE LOVE YOU!
