Shake That Kitty!

Carol came up with the expression “Shake That Kitty,” as seen in the DVD menu for Azumanga Daioh. Great Dick Dale style surf guitar.

I strung together some snippets, including another menu from the DVD. The other scenes are from an episode where a cat costume figures prominently. The cat parade is very nice, don’t you think?

The character that pets the dog is the one shaking the kitty. Her cat bites her every time she tries to pet it, so she’s quite taken with the placid dog.

  1. One last point. If you right-click, where it says “About Adobe Flash Player,” which version is it? Should be at least 8. Nine is better. If you left-click the “About Adobe Flash Player” it will take you where you need to go to update.

  2. I should add that if you click anywhere on the video while it’s playing it should pause. Clicking again resumes playback.

  3. What you’re watching is an analog video capture that happens to include the DVD menus. You can’t interact with them, so clicking does nothing.

It shouldn’t be stopping halfway through the video and returning to the beginning on its own. It might stop if it isn’t downloading fast enough to stay ahead of where you are at a particular moment. That would happen if the black play bar caught up to the gray download bar. It should then pick up where it paused. But return to the start? That ain’t right.

By the way, don’t play with the options that come up by doing a right-click. The guy who wrote the player should have either enabled them properly or hidden them. I might take a stab at doing the latter.

  4. The enlarged size looks just fine. However, since I am far less picky than you, I’m happy as long as it’s clear! Still, I had a problem when showing this to Molly the first time. It hung up halfway through the part where she’s petting the dog, and returned to the beginning. Also, if you click on the other numbers, nothing happens; is that OK? STOOPID JEAN!

  5. The bigger size is, I should have mentioned, 400×300. Previously I was forcing a box of 425×320, but that was with a higher-quality video that “scales up” more smoothly.

  6. How does the enlarged size look? It’s done the same way I did it for the previous method of creating videos — by simply telling the player I want a bigger box and making it scale the video up to fill it.

The original is, as before, 320 pixels horizontal by 240 veritical, but the bit rate is 100 Kbps less than it was with the prior method, so the quality isn’t as good. The next setting up doubles the rate, and I don’t want to do that because it would double the encoding and transfer times. But, as I’ve said before, I think the merits of doing embedded Flash videos are worth the compromises.

  7. Dishonorable Papa-san Tom has a less honorable name for “Shake That Kitty.” Will not repeat here on family site!

  8. I think Japan has done what the Beatles did — take something that’s American and give it back to us, better than it was. I don’t know if it’s ironic that this process began even before the Beatles came to the US — with the introduction of Astro Boy in 1963 — but it took a long time.

In between, there was an awful lot of Japanese junk of no significance, and I’m sure today there’s still plenty of Anime that isn’t worth watching. But somewhere along the line creative people asserted themselves and there is some highly original entertainment to be seen.

I agree that Molly and her cousins will look back on this stuff — and Harry Potter — with the same high regard that we have for what we lived as kids 40 years ago. And rightly so!

  9. HAI! Shadow boobs! Defy gwavity! Molly absolutely adores this series! I must admit, I’m hooked now, too. “Shake that kitty” lol! The smart little girl who’s already in high school is very much like her favorite character in ‘Fruits Basket,” Momijii,” who is also very childlike, in both body and voice, but actually IS 15. Weird. I think that for many of today’s kids, the non-X-rated anime, manga, whatever, will be their “Charlie Brown Christmas,” etc.
