Petula Clark – 1959

In 1959 Pet was given yet another persona, going from Pop to schmaltz. “I Love a Violin” is from 1959, although I would guess this video is probably from 1960 or ’61.

  1. “I love a Violin” was written by a lady called Kay Thompson, and Petula recorded it in Hollywood for her aclaimed album “Petula Clark in Hollywood”, dating from 1959, long before she was famous in America. Her musical director for this track was Pete King, although on the album she also worked with Billy May, and Don Ralke. By this time she must have been working quite a bit in French, and I think the sophistication that she absorbed in France was starting to show in her voice.

The song wasn’t a hit in the UK, but my mum tells me that it was “never off the radio”, so I’m guessing that, if there had been a top 30 at that time, it probably would have been in it.

Anyway, I’m sorry it took just over a year for me to answer that question Jeaniebeanie. I’ll try to smarten up for the next one!!

  2. Another bad fit — not the dress! Nice shoulders! They’re making her sing an octave or two below her normal range. The song REEKS! Who wrote this stuff? Well, her talent still comes through, anyway. God, what did she weigh — 90 pounds?
