Who’s Hitting Who?

I agree with Arlo’s sentiment here…

Watch this 30-second clip from a movie that was recently shown on Turner Classic Movies. Can you name the character actor who punches “Santa”? Who’s playing Santa?

  1. P.S. Dennis, you and I think alike! I also immediately thought of Bedford Falls before I even turned on the clip! “Mary! Mary! It’s me! George!” “I don’t know you!”

  2. WUH? I got it RIGHT? But my hat is off to Maestro Dennis. I NEVER would have guessed Arthur for the little guy, except now that I now and listen to the clip, he’s RIGHT! “What have I done? I’ve killed the RABBIT! Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha” (then crying)

  3. Yes, that’s the face of the voice of Elmer Fudd. I hadn’t considered short and pudgy Arthur Q. Bryan to be a candidate to be mistaken for tall and thuggish Broderick Crawford! But I guess I can see it now.

The movie is Larceny, Inc. (1942), with a great cast, including Anthony Quinn at age 27. Edward G. Robinson was at his hammy self-parodying best, two years before he did a super job as the insurance fraud investigator in “Double Indemnity.”

  4. I don’t see any Wascawy Wabbits in this scene, but could that be the voice of Elmer Fudd in the flesh – Arthur Q. Bryan? This must be a rare appearance onscreen. He was also featured in many Old Time Radio shows. He played Doc Gamble on one of my all time favorites, Fibber McGee and Molly. It’s pretty funny that he does look a bit like the older Broderick Crawford – with the real Crawford almost unrecognizable under the Santa suit! A strange but funny clip – almost looks like Bedford Falls – and so clear and smooth!

  5. Yup, Santa is a young and relatively slim Broderick Crawford, who’s actually quite funny in this movie. But who is the little man who punches him?
