What merchandising? Watterson only authorized books! But of course you could be referring to Mr. Larson, who to this day probably makes more off of Far Side mug sales than I’ll make in my lifetime. But will there ever be such fame and fortune again for any regular ink and paper cartoonists?
So, what does a retired cartoonist do? Go back to college and do cartoons for the college paper? Read the complete works of John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes? Retire to a hut near the water in Tahiti and pay the bills with the merchandising money?
