Spangler Candy Company of Bryan, Ohio has been in business for just over 100 years. The company makes Dum-Dums and, for this time of year, candy canes. Carol bought a box of a dozen tall Spangler candy canes to hang on the tree. I love the clean, classic, old-fashioned packaging, but when I looked it over I saw the words, “Made in Mexico” (click picture to enlarge). Well, that’s disappointing, although I have to admit the box cost only $1, and online you can order a box of 500 little ones for only $15.76. But with Hershey’s now manufacturing in Mexico, I was hoping a nice family company like Spangler could have held out and kept production in the United States.

Hey, that’s neat. Well, no “neat neat” because it must be a sticky mess making all of those candy canes, but it’s a nice thing. I’m surprised they can sell so many at the store without going to mail order.
Well, you can’t order them, but if you happen to be out in LA, if you’re willing to drive for an hour, you can apparently get hand made candy canes still. I’d guess you can also find them elsewhere, but there was a fun NPR story about Logan’s Candies in Ontario, CA(lifornia)
We gave up on peppermint canes years ago. We buy the fruit-flavored varieties now. But I doubt those are made in the USA either.
Ay carumba! Nothing is sacred anymore. We buy the candy canes to use as part of an advent calendar Molly made way back in kindergarten, and also cause I also like them on the tree. NOBODY here likes to eat them! They all get chucked when the decorations come down, but this year, I think I’ll crush a few for baking.
Say, do you think Santa himself is now Chinese?
