Tech Trouble Quiz

I’m still, can you believe it, pulling stuff from my old tower PC onto my new mini-tower PC. We’ve been having lots of thunderstorms lately, so I’ve been good about turning off my computer before leaving the house or going to bed, because the battery in my uninterruptable power supply is just about played out.

Tonight I couldn’t start my PC. Dead battery in UPS, but that’s OK because I paid only $12 for the thing (thanks, tastewar, how long ago was that?), and it’s worked well until recently. The UPS wouldn’t turn back on, so I moved the PC plug over to the surge protector side of the unit.

I powered up the PC and logged onto my account. Within moments the computer shut itself down. Huh. Did it again and it powered itself off again. Ah. Of course. I powered it up again but got into safe mode. I ran a Windows utility program and changed something. Then I restarted Windows, logged onto my account and it was fine.

What did I change to fix the problem? tastewar will know the answer, I’m sure.

  1. This sort of problem is way too difficult to figure out from a distance. You’re not in safe mode. It’s saying that because it means a feature that’s needed isn’t working and it’s one of the features that’s disabled in Safe Mode.

All you’re trying to do is an HTTP download. Have you tried all of the browsers that are installed?

  2. I tried the download, tastewar, but I got the same error message, “Windows Dowloader not working.” It also says I may be running my computer in safe mode, but I’m not! Now what?

  3. I wasn’t documenting my prized possessions; merely cataloging some things that take my time. The TV largely maintains itself 🙂

  4. No; I have 3 kids and am the volunteer treasurer at my church. I also have 3 PC’s, 2 Macs, and 1 linux laptop of my own to maintain. Free time isn’t exactly something I have…

That said, here’s a direct download link for Adobe Reader 9 (which a few minutes of googling revealed) which will hopefully eliminate any problems you may be experiencing with their more complex web-based install. Reader

  5. UPS? Isn’t that the brown delivery truck? tastewar, can you “come onna my house” and fix my elderly PC? Doug would have about as much patience with me as, well, as he did with me as a kid! NONE! No offense, Dougie! We’re too peas in a pod, literally! Most importantly, how can I get a fricklin’ version of Adobe Reader to download?
