I was going to fire up the HDTV projector to watch the Democratic convention finale, but instead I have it streaming over Yahoo. It all feels sort of forced and staged, and the announcers sound as though they’re at the Academy Awards. Let’s just get this done and move on to the contest.

Mad Made Men
This article in the Boston Globe says the New England mob isn’t what it used to be. I always wonder about pronouncements like this one, because they almost invite somebody to prove them wrong. Oh! I know who can bring organized crime back to New England in a big way. The Joker!

Guess the Cartoonist
I wonder if this cartoon was inspired by the famous photo of the Times Square kiss on V-J Day? Can you name the cartoonist?
I’m as good as anybody at recognizing the work of somebody I’m familiar with, but looking at this I see no hint whatsoever of his later style. He was a successful, well-known contemporary of Charles Schulz. In fact, for about the first ten years of ‘Peanuts’ he was more successful than Schulz.
A V-J Record
I missed noting V-J Day back on August 14, but I’ll do it now. It’s hard to believe I was born only ten years after the end of the war.
The famous photo taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt in Times Square wasn’t the only view of the sailor grabbing the girl and kissing her. From a different angle, Navy photographer Victor Jorgensen also caught the moment.
A song that’s strongly reminiscent of World War II is “I’ll Be Seeing You.” Don’t confuse it with “We’ll Meet Again,” that’s heard at the end of Dr. Strangelove. Liberace renewed the popularity of “I’ll Be Seeing You,” and stressless songstress Jo Stafford recorded it in ’58.

Petula Clark always sounds a bit amused that the French called her “sexy Pet.” But, then, what do the French know about what’s sexy?
If you’ve never heard of Alizée, you might be in for a bit of shock, because this is what passes for family entertainment in France. But I’ve never watched So You Think You Can Dance, so what do I know? Maybe it would be considered mainstream in America too.
Here is French superstar Alizée, five years ago, age eighteen. Computer gamer types will recognize this from the World of Warcraft. It was the basis for the Night Elf Dance.
