Box of 40 Spangler Candy Canes

Click to enlargeBack just before Christmas, at this link I took the Spangler Candy Company of Bryan, OH to task for making their candy canes in Mexico. But now the intrepid investigator Dennis F. Rogers has turned up a startling piece of evidence. A box of Spangler candy canes made in the good ol’ U.S.A.! Click the thumbnail view to see the proof.

What’s different about this box is that the Mexico-sourced package had 12 full-size candy canes, and this one has 40 small ones. So what’s the deal here? Are only the larger candy canes made in Mexico? Was that batch outsourced, or are the small candy canes from an old batch, before production was moved out of the country? I don’t know, but for now the Spangler Candy Company has partially redeemed itself in my view.

If Hillary Can Make A Comeback…

The big upset last week was Hillary getting whupped in Iowa by Barack. Well, New Hampshire has put Hillary back in the running!

Another big upset last week was Warner Bros. pictures abandoning Toshiba’s HD-DVD format in favor of Sony’s Blu-Ray. Yet last night, and again tonight, Toshiba advertised HD-DVD on The Colbert Report.

I don’t know if there’s any hope for my favored format (no, I don’t own an HD player), but at least there’s still some fight left in ’em at Toshiba! Or maybe they were just too depressed to remember to cancel this week’s ad campaign. 😉

On The Beat In New Hampshire

Tom Moroney - Simply Put on Bloomberg RadioTom Moroney is host of a show on Bloomberg Radio called Simply Put. Prior to that he was a newspaper columnist. Kudos to Tom for succeeding in the two businesses I tried, but gave up! By chance Tom lives not far from here, and we cross paths every so often. My sister Jean and I went to high school with Tom. We were all in the drama club, along with a remarkable woman named Noreen Barnes, a dear friend who is now a college professor in Virginia. Here’s a picture of Tom and Noreen in a high school play together. I don’t want to say how long ago this was!

Tom Moroney is up in New Hampshire right now, covering the Presidential primary. The surprise news at the moment is that Hillary Clinton is holding a lead over Barack Obama. Here’s a brief clip of Tom on the radio tonight.

Buffoon O’Reilly’s All Spin Zone

Few media personalities are more deserving of derision and ridicule than Bill O’Reilly. OK, Rush Limbaugh maybe is one.

There’s a video that’s been widely circulated today, and I’m about to circulate it some more. It was pointed out to me by a friend at work. Remember — they report, you decide!

The King Still Rules

Memphis, Tenn. (Denro News) — Elvis Presley celebrated his 73rd birthday today in a quiet gathering held at his Graceland Mansion in Memphis. His daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, and her children, presented him with a golden, diamond encrusted guitar-shaped belt buckle.

Elvis, still known as “The King Of Rock and Roll”, has kept a low profile for the past few years due to ongoing health concerns. A near death experience in August 1977 caused a drastic lifestyle change for the beloved American Icon. After a months-long recovery from a heart attack, complicated by a serious prescription drug addiction, Presley fired his longtime manager, Tom Parker, and greatly reduced his public appearances.

He recorded mainly gospel tunes for the next ten years and his fans consider these to be some of his most passionate performances. His epic three hour concert in July 2004, marking fifty years in the recording industry, was his last major public appearance.

Elvis took his grandchildren for a ride around the Graceland grounds today and waved to the several hundred fans gathered outside the gates. Elvis is reportedly working an album of duets with a variety of contemporary performers, tentatively scheduled to be released this summer.
