From November 10, 1976, here I am on college radio, passing the mic over to Dennis Rogers.
[audio:http://www.dograt.com/Audio/2009/APR/DenDoug.mp3]As good as a Jon Stewart toss to Stephen Colbert? Uh, no. Not with my awful attempt at ad-libbing. It was at that time I began my internship at the radio station in town. When I graduated it turned into a paying job, but it sure didn’t pay very much!
For those who don’t know, Cactus Lizzie and I were a team in the radio biz back in the 70’s. She spun the records, and I did the news.
My college radio station tape that I made, and still have, sounds laughable! I was so scared, talked slow and halting and my voice was too thin. It made me wince to hear it, even right after I had made the air check. Believe me, Doug, this clip here from you is a LOT better!!!
Of course we both went on to get much more comfortable behind the microphone. It’s been the mid 1990’s since I last logged off the airwaves. But I still feel like I could go back and easily talk on air again, don’t you? Once you get the hang of it, it’s kind of like knowing how to ride a bike or swim, I think.
Don’t be so hard on yourself, Dougie! I think you and Dennis sound great! considering you’re only 21, fer crying out loud. Great song choices, by the way.
