Harvey Kurtzman created MAD Magazine, which is, sadly, apparently about to fold. Kurtzman also inadvertently helped put Monty Python together, as I explained here.
There’s a brand-new book out, called The Art of Harvey Kurtzman, and I’m sure if I buy it for Dennis on his birthday, he’ll buy me a copy for my birthday. That way we don’t feel like we bought our own copies.
I’m looking forward to seeing it. I caught Kurtzman a couple of times in the 70’s at Boston convention appearances. At one of them he was drinking a Bud beer, and when he was done with the can I grabbed it and had him sign it with an indelible marker. I was in college at the time and hid the can in what I thought would be a safe place in my room at home, but to my regret it disappeared.
Such a beautiful book! The stuff they picked for it was awesome.
