Riddle of the Doors

The recordings that Frank Sinatra made with arranger Nelson Riddle are classics, but did you know that Riddle also once worked with the Doors? Riddle was the musical director for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and he backed up the Doors for a live performance of the song Touch Me.

  1. Hey, they didn’t sing “Stronger Than Dirt!” at the end. 😉 I remember Val Kilmer nailed that performance in Oliver Stone’s “The Door’s,” even missing the second verse of “Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on … ” But I DID NOT KNOW that was Nelson Riddle playing the strings. Who’s playing the cool sax, though?

Speaking of the Les Freres Smothers, I would sure like to get my hands on some of their DVDs. What a gold mine of great shows! I still remember laughing my butt off on their “tour” through the house where “Honey” was composed. These guys were geniuses, and don’t forget Pat Paulsen! Credit goes to usually nervous CBS for keeping them on as long as they did!

  2. There are “best of” DVD collections from the three Smothers Bros. seasons that I’ve been meaning to see. Maybe they’re on the third season set.
