That Sinking Feeling

I haven’t yet seen the Netflix mini-series The Queen’s Gambit. It has, along with sheltering in place at home from the coronavirus, reportedly greatly increased demand for chess sets. Actual, physical boards and pieces.

Me? I’ve been playing Electronic Hand-Held Battleship. A gift for my son many years ago, that he no longer plays, now with a new CR2032 battery.

  1. Yes, Happy Thanksgiving! I’m having fun with this toy, having found it in a cabinet drawer, unused for years. I remember those early portable games from Coleco. What an innovative era that was, with products like Radio Shack’s TRS-80 Model 100. Newspapers used them with acoustic couplers to upload stories written in the field by reporters.

  2. Reminds me a bit of handheld electronic football games of the late 70’s, like a friend of mine had. Can’t remember if it was the Coleco version (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Quarterback) or Mattel. I remember being terrible at it. Of course, I only ever had a few minutes with it, but everyone else seemed to get it better than I did.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Doug!
