Perfectionists are rarely easy to get along with when they’re working.
And dance! When she got the role in “Singing in the Rain,” Gene Kelly loved her singing and acting but not her dancing. He whipped her into shape with horribly long hours of practice, skipped meals, and derogatory comments. Gene was not the nice guy we all thought. But when the cameras finally rolled, Debbie was superb.
