Since retiring, I have very much enjoyed spending a few hours on Monday nights listening to Big Planet Noise, while chatting with fellow Planeteers as Beantown Doug. BPN was on WMFU’s streaming station called Give the Drummer, a phrase taken from a James Brown song.
I say “was,” past tense, because Bob Irwin sent me a note saying that Monday’s show will be the final Big Planet Noise, citing “differences in philosophies.” This sounds like a repeat of what Debbie Daughtry went through with WMFU management, leading her to start Boss Radio 66. Barnes Newberry had a falling out with WUMB in Boston, and landed on the Martha’s Vineyard station WMVY, where Denro’s brother is a DJ. Bob promises that Big Planet noise will resurface.
There are other WFMU shows I follow, justifying my continued “Swag for Life” status with the station, but Bob’s departure is a very significant loss. If his BPN co-host Gina Bacon ends her Someday Matinee show, I will have to reconsider my level of financial support for WFMU.
