Captain America vs. The Red Skull

Previously on DogRat I posted this old TV cartoon…

I promised to scan and post the story from the Silver Age of comic books that the cartoon was based on. Click the picture below or here to see it in the gallery.

Captain America in Action

Compare and contrast the comic with the cartoon. Extra credit if you can name the original comic book issues.

  1. The Red Skull’s voice was Paul Kligman, who also did J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man cartoon, produced by the same low-budget studio.

Where the voices of those cartoons get more interesting is when talking about Paul Soles, the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who was also the voice of Bucky in the Captain America cartoons (maybe I’ll post a Cap that has Bucky).

Before doing the Marvel Super Heroes cartoons, Paul Soles had been the voice of Hermy the Elf in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Another interesting name associated with those cartoons was the late John Vernon, who was in the first Dirty Harry movie, and is perhaps best known as Dean Wormer in Animal House. Vernon voiced Tony Stark (Iron Man) and the Sub-Mariner.

  2. I need a hypno-helmet so I can’t “see” the mess this house is in! Mud tracked in everywhere! Seriously, there is no comparison between the primitive animation and the slick comic book drawings. Say, the guy doing the Red Skull’s voice in the cartoon sounds familiar; any ideas?
