Stephen is having a tough time going it alone during the Writer’s Guild of America strike. Some WGA members are even calling him a scab. That’s cold. Anyway, I think this bit is the best of his first week back.

If Hillary Can Make A Comeback…
The big upset last week was Hillary getting whupped in Iowa by Barack. Well, New Hampshire has put Hillary back in the running!
Another big upset last week was Warner Bros. pictures abandoning Toshiba’s HD-DVD format in favor of Sony’s Blu-Ray. Yet last night, and again tonight, Toshiba advertised HD-DVD on The Colbert Report.
I don’t know if there’s any hope for my favored format (no, I don’t own an HD player), but at least there’s still some fight left in ’em at Toshiba! Or maybe they were just too depressed to remember to cancel this week’s ad campaign. 😉

Colbert Rapport
The Colbert Report is back for the first time since Stephen Colbert met me in New York! OK, OK, so I met him. Whatever. This is also the first time I’ve watched Colbert on the PANASONIC PT-AX200U (that’s for the benefit of Google Alerts) video projector. And I would like to emphatically state that JON STEWART AND STEPHEN COLBERT NEED TO GO HDTV!
Without his writers, Colbert stretched things out a bit, and he padded with some video clips, but it came off all right. The question is, of course, how many consecutive nights can even a phenomenally intelligent and funny talent like Colbert go, before the ad-lids and improv start to wear thin?

Stephen Colbert On Larry King
As you perhaps know, on January 7 The Colbert Report will be back, as will The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, whether or not the writer’s strike has been resolved. In the meantime, to help you get your Colbert fix, here’s his appearance on Larry King Live, the least prepared interviewer in the business, from a couple of months back. It’s much better than I expected.

Mallard Fillmore Gets It Wrong Again
One of the worst comic strips I know of is Mallard Fillmore, by Bruce Tinsley. The Mallard character is like Howard the Duck, except he’s a neo-con. Mallard Fillmore is amusing to me only when Tinsley says something so inanely misinformed or misleading that I laugh at his idiocy. An excellent example is the installment from a few days ago, about Stephen Colbert.
I saw Stephen Colbert last week in New York, and he certainly had no difficulty being funny and entertaining, entirely on his own. Colbert is as much a writer as he is a performer, with improvisation and ad-libbing being what he does best! I don’t know if Tinsley doesn’t know this, or if he’s deliberately trying to create a false impression, but once again he has proven himself to be a cartoonist with no other point than the one at the tip of his pen.
