Tapped Out

I’ll get a jump on next year’s 40th(!) anniversary of one of my two favorite comedy movies, This is Spinal Tap.

My other favorite laugh-filled movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which is scheduled for limited release in theaters only on December 3. Wait, no. It will be shown again on December 6. But that will be the absolute last time. Never again to be repeated, not ever!

Go Fund Her

You don’t know Larry Blamire’s The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra?? You will… oh, YOU WILL!

I am very cautious when supporting GoFundMe campaigns. You’re giving money to someone outright, with no strings attached. When Larry Blamire announced this campaign on behalf of Jennifer “Animala” Blaire, my only hesitation in making a donation was the time it took to recover from reading the story behind her troubles.

New Amp for Old Music

Once again we have the opportunity for a musical visit with good, ol’ R. Crumb, who has been living in France for — YOWZA! — 32 years. Robert is delving into 78’s that are even more obscure than his usual fare.

OTRS 141 R. CRUMB’S RECORD ROOM (part 59) “MUSIC OF ETHIOPIA & SOMALIA” special guest’s Robert Crumb & his glorious 78rpm records and that lovable scamp Eden Brower.

I see that I’m not the only one with an audio acquisition. That appears to be a Marantz amp of fairly recent vintage in Crumb’s listening room.

Roming Charges

SNL has this funny bit, picking up on the factoid that many men supposedly think about Ancient Rome several times each day. Something I don’t want to think about it how many times MAGA men think about Nazi Germany every day!

Speaking for myself, I never give a single thought to Ancient Rome…

… and there is no indication whatsoever of my having even a subconscious interest in Ancient Rome.

Let’s Twist Again

Jim Dawson with Hank Ballard

Jim Dawson occasionally moonlights from his Wednesday night “Not Fade Away” gig on Luxuria Music, to guest host KPFK’s “Rhapsody in Black” show. The November 18 episode is Jim’s tribute to his late friend, the legendary R&B talent Hank Ballard. If you do some twisting of the scroll wheel, it should be available in the station’s archive for a couple of weeks.

Ballard wrote and performed “The Twist”…

… but of course Chubby Checker’s record was the big hit.

Topp Deals

I am very impressed with the Topping E30 II Lite external digital-to-analog converter I bought a few weeks ago. Purchased primarily for the display, to figure out my Chromecast Audio problem, the improvement in sound over the built-in DAC’s in my digital sources is obvious. The shimmer of cymbals is very realistic compared to what I had been hearing all these years, and the overall sound is now much more “open and spacious.”

The E30 II Lite is on sale for $85, compared to the $100 that I paid for mine.

It’s called the “Lite” model because its more expensive brother, the E30 II, has two DAC circuits. Normally costing $150, the E30 II is also currently 15% off. As I always do, and enjoy very much doing, I took a deep dive into the technical weeds to finalize a selection, and I couldn’t find a reason to buy the more expensive model, other than bragging rights for having two DAC’s.

Note: These products come with power cables, but not a power adapter. A standard 5V USB adapter with an “A” port is needed, and by now doesn’t everybody have some spares sitting in a drawer?
